so the new official have-fun-in-vancouver mandate is MAKE YOUR OWN FUN. that’s right. also, adopting the charmingly american practice of driving to bars, with one person staying sober (enough) to drive home on the rainy streets. it means you can get somewhere in under an hour, something otherwise not permitted by vancouver public transit, and you can wear whatever shoes you want, something otherwise not permitted by vancouver weather. on friday, we guzzled free wine and cheese at the art history symposium sarah organized, my favourite speaker did a thing about Robert Frank’s Americans and beat poetry, the title is my favourite quote from his piece. after stashing all the free crackers, we piled in to sarah’s toyota and went to a gallery-opening downtown, at the belkin satellite. i HATED the art, it had some interesting elements but otherwise was too all-over-the-place and meaningless for my taste. think acid-bright colours and lots of poured latex paint, and 3D elements. not a fan. on saturday alix, carolyn and i bought art supplies on granville island. i wish i could get it together to go down there more often, it’s super-lovely. on saturday night we got high and slept in a tent in my new living room, eating pineapple upside-down cake and mallows. delightful. fun is what you make it.
